About the Museum

Opened to the public in May 2009 and relocated to Kemah in 2024, the Butler Longhorn Museum is a one-of-a-kind cultural heritage destination in Kemah, Texas. The museum celebrates the remarkable story of local rancher Milby Butler and his vital role in saving the legendary Texas Longhorn from extinction.

Inside, visitors will find an ADA-compliant facility filled with rare artifacts, local art, history and science exhibits, and a gift shop. The museum not only preserves the Butler Longhorn bloodline but also tells the broader story of Galveston county's history, tracing its roots back to the Butler Ranch and Cattle Station before the Civil War.

The museum thrives thanks to the support of dedicated partners, including the Environmental Institute of Houston, the Butler Texas Longhorn Breeders, the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association, the Friends of the Butler Longhorn Museum, and many more.
